Talkin 'bout a 360 degree 3rd time Revolution
Sunday 22 May 2005
Perhaps it’s time for a bit of a rant, a little bit of a chat on the state of the world, or something similar. Well, let’s see. I’m a geek, and E3 just finished with a host of techie fun and unveilings. Let’s do that.
Of course, I am assuming that you know what E3 is. If you don’t, and perhaps if you’ve also been living under a rock with your eyes closed, your fingers in your ears and something jammed up your nose, perhaps you haven’t heard of the little demos of the three next generation consoles that are coming out, being the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the Revolution.
So, I hear you cry, why, when, where, how much, why should I bother?
Simple, dear reader. You are a consumerist member of western society who plays video games. Of course. Why wouldn’t you bother?
In all seriousness now, I can see myself getting two of the three next gen consoles, for different reasons. The third… well, assuming that a certain event happens and a certain technique is not only possible but pretty damn awesome, I might get one. At some point.
I will most likely buy a Sony PlayStation 3. I am the most impressed with it’s tech specs (I just want a CELL), and I love a lot of the RPGs on PS2 and PSX. Hence, since SquarEnix are continuing to make both FF & SO games, I consider the PS3 a fun machine - also for the other games I would consider playing. However, I doubt I’ll get a launch machine, doubt very much… I’m a spending whore, not a rich bastard.
I will possibly get a Nintendo Revolution. Why? I’ve been a Nintendo fanboy for a long time now, since I got a SNES when I was eleven. Zelda. Mario. Sonic (well, now ^_^). Oh, and did I mention that Nintendo has set up a download service where you can obtain versions of all Nintendo published games ever made for any of their consoles that will run on the Revolution?
Yes. That’s right. Breathe. :)
The 360 now… I dislike it for a couple of reasons. One, it’s made by Microsoft, who I am theologically opposed to. Yes. Theologically. Two, I dislike the look of the console - don’t know why, it just grates on me. Three, I have so far played one game on the original Xbox that would hold my interest for more than a few hours, and that was Fable. One game for a console? No thanks. Oh, and this brings me to Four. ** The Xbox 360 is not backwards compatible without recompiling the original games**. That’s right. To play your Xbox games on the 360, you will need to obtain new versions of each game. Assuming they are recompiled - I’m guessing that not many would be. Oh, and you’d probably have to pay for the new versions too.
Now, all that suckiness aside… if it turns out that you can install MacOSX on the Xbox 360 (and you quite possibly can) and it turns out to run at a rather smooth and agreeable speed (utilising as it does a tri-core 970-based chip)… I am so getting an Xbox. For the reason of running a tri core G5 Mac. Funny, isn’t it, that Microsoft could build a faster Mac than Apple?
Of course, the RAM would be an issue (unless it’s upgradeable) and there’s no doubt a few other little issues… but c’mon! A tri 3.2Ghz Mac! Sold!
I’ll leave off here, as I’m starting to geek out. I might do a more life related entry soonish. See how I feel.
